Notes from Google News

--> Two advantages of internet for news audience

1. Easily find multiple perspectives on important news items
2. Also, easily get small news stories easily available

--> There has been a paradigm shift in last 20 years ....the shift from browsing news sources, to discover what might be interesting, to searching for material we already know we are interested in.

--> There is a difference between "Browsing and Searching"

--> Google rules for news papers, apply equally to magazines, TV and other media as well.

     1. Decide what business you are in

News papers are in news business, paper business or logistic business?....the internet began to render manufacturing/printing and distribution parts of the business less relevant. So, what business should newspapers be in...A journalism business broader than news, and less platform specific than paper.

     2. Do what you do best and link to the rest

      Aggregation (Link to the rest)
      Curation (Link to the best)

   3. Collaboration
       Collaboration is co-creation.

   4. Listen well

--> Audience do not want to pay for content and almost always expect content to be free

--> Audience willing to pay for experience but not content

--> Why were information providers hurt rather than helped by internet?

1. The price of online content headed towards zero, and users came to expect "free"
2. Internet advertising brought less money than expected
3. The explosion of media sources meant any individual source commanded less time and attention
4. Audience members began creating their own content and sharing with each other

--> Audience decide what is being published rather than "media" decide what they would read.

--> Portals have disappeared online as consumers have found niche sites they love. That's a common problem between Yahoo and news papers.

--> Google news...no humans were used or harmed in it's creation. It's another algorithm driven product.
